Redwoods' first coach was a 1927 Chevrolet which was bought in 1932 by Walter Redwood.
It was Walter who had founded the family business in Hemyock - a small village on the Devon/Somerset border - providing taxi hire and a bicycle repair service. Walter then began regular bus service to Wellington and Taunton and added coach hire to his range of services.
The business expanded through the war years because of the opportunities offered by the building of three airfields nearby. There were many workers who needed daily transport throughout the district and a number of American troops who we’re based nearby.
After the war there was great demand for transport for private hire, weddings, excursions, tours and private holidays. Walter Redwood's son, Brian, steadily built the business into an established local company.
Since Brian's retirement his own son Paul - together with his wife Jacquie - have run this family firm to the same standards and quality of service which enabled the firm to grow in size and reputation over the first 80 years of its existence.
In recent years, Paul’s son Michael has joined the firm, taking this truly family affair into it’s fourth generation. Walter could never have imagined that his actions to purchase a coach back in 1932 could have such a defining effect on the future of his family for decades to come.
We are all very proud of our record: this 35 coach operation is one of the very best in the west country - as proved by the fact that our customers come back to us time after time.
Our guiding principles have always been to charge a fair price, to keep standards high and to keep the customer happy.
Whatever the future brings - some things will not change!
